Anne > Lattimore Urn from the Lattimore Mound, Urn discovered by Betty Lattimore digging in Allendale County SC. This item was examined thoroughly by Clemons de Baillou (of Hollywood Mound B fame)David Phelps (Whites or Pollards Mound)all of whom agreed that it should be dated to the early contact period, the 1500'.Since this urn and it's companion piece with the suspiciously Spanish-like incised human figure were found right in the middle of the lower Savannah River Valley, they present two more problems for those who have contended that there was no occupation of this area during this same period(1450-1650), a period which they contend ,there were no indians in the Savannah River Valley, it was a "vast desert"(Hudson 1984:27)Mrs. Lattimore believes that the figure incised in this bowl was inspired by the Spanish because the helmet(or hat) the figure is wearing and the sword(or tapered stick)that the figure is holding .She also notes that the site that produced these urns also produced some ceramic sherds unique in her with red abd white colors on the surface which sometimes flaked off as though not glazed. She believed they were inspired by Spanish ceramics if not actually Spanish items.Excerpted from The Soto States Anthropologist Volume 90 Number 2 October 1990
